Guide · Local SEO

Local citations, explained plainly.

What they are, why they matter, and how to build them without paying an agency $200 an hour.

What is a citation?

A citation is any mention of your business's name, address, and phone number (“NAP”) on another website. It doesn't have to be a link. Just the presence of those three pieces of information counts.

Google reads citations across the web and uses them to verify a business is real, established, and where it says it is. A business with 40 consistent citations across trusted directories ranks better on Google Maps than one with 5.

The rule that matters most

Consistency. Every listing must use the exact same name, address format, and phone number. “Yellow CC” on one directory and “YellowCC” on another looks like two separate businesses to Google's algorithm.

Pick your canonical NAP once, put it in a text file, and use it everywhere. If you move or change numbers, update every listing. Old citations with wrong info do real damage.

South Africa · the directories that matter

Not all directories are worth the effort. These six carry weight with Google and get real traffic in SA. Ignore anything not on this list.

  • Yellow Pages South Africayellowpages.co.za
  • Brabysbrabys.com
  • Ananziananzi.co.za
  • Cylex South Africacylex.co.za
  • Hotfrog South Africahotfrog.co.za
  • Snupitsnupit.co.za

United States · the directories that matter

Google Business Profile first, always. After that, the list below covers ~90% of what Google indexes for local businesses in the US.

  • Google Business Profilebusiness.google.com
  • Yelpbiz.yelp.com
  • Bing Placesbingplaces.com
  • Apple Business Connectbusinessconnect.apple.com
  • Facebook Businessfacebook.com/business
  • Better Business Bureaubbb.org
  • Nextdoor Businessnextdoor.com/business
  • Angi (for home services)angi.com

The order to build them

Do them one per day for two weeks. Trying to do all of them in one sitting is a fast way to make mistakes and end up with inconsistent NAP across your listings.

Priority order: start with Google Business Profile, then Bing Places (it feeds Microsoft Copilot), then Apple Business Connect, then any industry-specific directories (Yelp for restaurants, Angi for home services), and finish with the general directories listed above.

What to skip

Any “citation building service” that promises 100+ listings for $99. They're bulk-submitting to low-quality directories that don't help ranking and often actively hurt it. Quality over quantity, always.
